Welcome to the San Diego Shining Blades website. We are the competitive (developmental) synchronized skating team based in San Diego, California.  The season runs from May-February. Each year, tryouts are held at the San Diego Ice Arena (SDIA). After tryouts, skaters will be placed on a team determined by age and skill level. The team trains 1–2 times a week, drilling basic skating skills and unison. Each team will learn choreography for their season’s program and compete. Our teams compete in Southern California and in the annual U.S. Synchronized Skating Pacific Coast Sectional Championships.

What is Synchronized Skating?
Synchronized skating or “synchro” is one of five disciplines recognized by U.S. Figure Skating, in which 8–20 athletes skate on the ice as a team.

Teams perform a choreographed program set to music, which requires them to execute formations including circles, lines, blocks, wheels, and intersections.

Why do Synchronized Skating?
Synchronized Skating reaches up to the World Championships. There is Olympic hope for the sport in 2026. Skaters can decide whether to continue the sport in college/university and commit to a school that offers a fully-funded varsity synchronized skating program. Several programs offer Senior or Collegiate level teams. Every season, qualifying senior teams are named to Team USA.

If a skater is interested in Synchronized Skating in college, and the school does not offer the sport, they may skate for a club nearby their university that offers competitive teams at their level.
